Raised Deck for Lee and Donna - Duston

The brief here was to create a useable area immediately outside the rear door of the extension, which as you can see is quite a bit higher than the garden. In addition to this, the site sloped away from the house. Steps were therefore incorporated as a means of getting down from the deck to the rest of the garden and handrails were necessary for safety reasons, as well as aesthetics.

Deck Features (click to see others with this feature):

You can see how the framing has been hidden by "cladding" the sides with decking planks. The next picture shows the site, prior to commencement (and the bags of concrete which will be used to set the supports into).

Here you can see the framework mostly completed. Notice the large number of 4"x4" (or if you prefer 100 mm x 100 mm) supports which were set into concrete. As ever, the site had been sprayed with "Roundup" and landscape fabric laid to prevent further weed growth beneath the deck.

The framing from a different angle and also the pile of deck planks, Newel posts, handrails and spindles which have yet to be cut and fitted. For a change, the sun actually came out!

The finished deck from a different angle. Notice how the planks have been fitted at 45 degrees to the frame. This is purely a matter of aesthetics depending on the customers' preference. Also notice the raised bottom rails of the balustrading which makes it easier to sweep any leaves or debris off the deck. Although it is not noticeable, there is a slight fall (slope) away from the house so that any water drains away. Also, there is a slight gap between the deck planking and the house to prevent any possibility of damp ingress.
